Celiac Disease diagnosis and treatment
The following report is an account of a condition that I encountered as a student nurse practitioner in practicum. It involved a 37-year-old female that had been suffering from chronic diarrhea for 6 years. The patient also complained of bloating and fatigue. Her condition had worsened in the last three days. Diagnosis
A simple blood test was done. Serology testing was conducted. The test involves looking for antibodies such as anti-tissue transglutaminase, endomysial and deamidatedgliadin peptide in the blood (Rashid & Lee, 2016). The patient showed signs of elevated protein levels of these antibodies. The serologic test indicated a celiac disease possibility (Bogaert et al, 2020). This prompted a biopsy to be done.
Treatment Plan
The patient was strictly advised to eat a gluten-free diet to manage the disease’ symptoms. This would enable her small intestines to heal and avert inflammation and more complications in the future (Niland& Cash, 2018). She was counseled on a gluten-free diet including supplements and medication, oats inclusion and cross-contamination. A review of age-appropriate vitamin D and calcium intake was also done. Gluten-free multivitamins such as folate and iron were also recommended. Celiac Disease Diagnosis and Treatment Essay
Followup
An appropriate follow-up after one month was conducted to ensure that the patient strictly adhered to the recommended gluten-free diet. The follow up was also important to ensure that she was getting better by the day. This was to avert the increased risk of mortality and poorer life quality.
To conclude, serologic testing was found to be efficient for screening the patient. Therefore, early diagnosis is important to avert celiac disease complications. Celiac Disease Diagnosis and Treatment Essay
