Impact of Nursing Theory Upon Healthcare Organization SAMPLE INTRO
Dr. Imogene King developed the Goal Attainment Theory to explain the interpersonal relationship systems in which people develop and progress through life to achieve personal life goals (Schub, 2016). King’s Theory of Goal Attainment is a dynamic notion that nursing interactions lead to actions that result in accomplishing a goal (Schub, 2016). According to King, goal attainment fosters successful nursing care as well as growth and development (Schub, 2016).

King’s Theory of Goal Attainment is used as a framework for nurse leadership and the director of nursing position. King’s theory is

based on accomplishing goals, which is the duty of a director of nursing. As a director of nursing an issue that may arrive is staff performance issues. This could be due to many factors for nurses. Long hours and high acuity patients lead to unhappy nurses. They feel over worked and underappreciated. As a director of nursing, it is imperative to be aware of these issues and find ways to address them to improve nurse satisfaction and performance. King’s Theory of Goal Attainment is a method that directors of nursing can use to address these issues……

I enjoyed reading your post about Dr. Imogene King’s theory of Goal Attainment and how it is used by nursing leadership and administration to deal with staff performance issues. In a way I find that it goes hand in hand with the theory that I selected which was Patricia Benner’s model of skill acquisition in nursing. Benner’s model focuses on the different stages of a nurses skill development and the roles that we take on. The nurse leader has certain goals that they want met from their employees. A good nurse leader knows that those goals must be in line with the level of skill the employee has aquired. A good nurse leader is not going to set a goal for a nurse to teach a fellow nurse if they have a novice skill level. Leaders then take into account all of the goals that they need to attain for the facility and the skill level of their employees. By keeping those two factors in mind, a good nurse leader can match the right task to the right employee.

What Purpose Do Nursing Theories Serve?

Nursing theories serve as a framework for nursing practice and are critical to patient care.
Academic hospitals and Magnet hospitals will make it a point to incorporate nursing theories into their policies and procedures on a regular basis to guarantee that best-practice is followed.

In their daily practice, most nurses and institutions will use a range of nursing theories rather than just one.
The majority of people do it unintentionally.

Nursing theories assist bedside nurses in evaluating patient care and determining nursing actions based on the findings.

The theories might also give nurses the justification they need to make certain choices.
The care of a Jehovah’s Witnesses patient who does not believe in blood transfusions is an example of a nursing theory in action.
While the patient may require a blood transfusion, Dorothea Orem’s Self-Care theory gives nurses a firm foundation for aiding their patients and allowing them to demonstrate independence and responsibility in their own care.
While the nurse may disagree with the patient’s decision not to undergo a blood transfusion, Orem’s theory says that it is critical to recognize the patient’s decision as their own.

The integration of nursing theory is not always as clear as in the case above.
Nurses and nursing students, on the other hand, must grasp and respect the significance of nursing theories and their impact on modern-day nursing and healthcare.

Who Benefits from Nursing Theories?

While all nurses use nursing theories in their work, regardless of position or specialization, not all nurses are aware of the ramifications.
Nurse educators and researchers, in general, use the majority of nursing theories.

Nursing theories will be used by nurse educators to create course curriculums based on educational concepts, research, and theories to give nursing students with the knowledge and skills they need to care for their patients.

Theory-guided research will be conducted by nurse researchers in order to develop best practices, predict new clinical difficulties, and explain existing knowledge.

Metaparadigms Needed

Since Florence Nightingale’s Environmental Theory, a slew of new nursing theories have emerged, including Imogene King’s Theory of Goal and Dorothy Johnson’s Behavioral System Model.
They all revolve around the nursing metaparadigm, which is something they all share in common.

A metaparadigm is a collection of beliefs or ideas that define how a discipline should work.
Fawcett was the first to categorize nursing metaparadigms into four categories:

Person \sEnvironment \sHealth \sNursing

All nursing theories are incomplete unless these four notions are identified and their connection to the theory is demonstrated.

These four basic nursing metaparadigms also point to a patient’s holistic care, and their medical wellness is linked to the four notions.
