THEORY DESCRIPTION 1
Bring in a mandala that represents Leininger’s theory. Discuss the components within the Leininger mandala.
2. Discuss your beliefs about the importance culture in your nursing practice. Why do you think that nursing needs a theory focused on culture? Be able to defend your answer.
3. Would you choose Transcultural Nursing theory as your theoretical base for practice if you were white, Anglo-Saxon protestant and worked with predominantly white, Anglo- Saxon protestant clients? What about if you were African American and worked with predominantly African American clients? Why or why not?
4. If you were to use Leininger’s theory as your theoretical base, how would your approach to patient care differ? Give a specific example of a client and how you could have used Leininger’s theory to provide quality care.
5. Discuss how middle-range theories differ from grand theories? What is an advantage of using middle-range theories? Discuss in class or post answers on chat/bulletin board.
6. Discuss why you think Origami was chosen as the art form to illustrate middle-range theories? Can you think of other art forms that could be used? Give examples.
7. Discuss the reciprocal nature of nurse-patient relationship. Post summary of the discussion on the classroom website if time in class is an issue.
8. After Orlando-Pelletier’s Nursing Process was introduced, it quickly became a unifying force in nursing with the vast majority of nurses using it the way to plan and execute care. Why do you think that nursing process was so widely accepted by nursing?
