Eczema describes a skin condition characterized with patches on the skin. These patches are inflamed, red, itchy and present as rough and cracked. Sometimes blisters are observed in an eczema patient. 31.6% of the US population is reported to suffer from this illness(Van Zuuren et al., 2017). According to the DSM-5 criteria, eczema is diagnosed by the presence of itchy skin areas However, the criteria does not provide a detailed explanation of eczema which is often considered as atopic dermatitis. The symptoms to be assessed in the patient include swelling o the skin andoozing or crusting, rough, scaly or leathery skin patches. Other clinical manifestations include red inflamed skin, dry sensitive skin, very bad itching as well as dark colored patches of skin(Drucker et al., 2017). In the patient, it is expected that the symptoms become more noticeable at night. However, the symptoms can come and go. Therefore, physical assessment and patient history from the parent will help reach an informed diagnosis.
The management and treatment of eczema in children involves the use of bleach baths. These are effective in the reduction of inflammations on the skin as they kill the bacteria on the skin(Elsner&Agner, 2020). This will help the patient in recovering. Topical medications will also be prescribed to the client to relieve itching and improve the symptoms. In addition, immunosuppressant medications will be prescribed to moderate the disorder. Immunosuppressants control the activities of the immune system and are administered as off-label medication. However, immunosuppressants are not approved by the Food and Drug Administration and hence are administered carefully as off-label drugs.
