WK4 DQ2
The health concern that impacts the population I am familiar with is diabetes. The incidence of diabetes is very high among African Americans. According to (Asmelash & Asmelash (2019), African American adults have a 60% likelihood of a diabetes diagnosis when compared to their non-Hispanic white counterparts. Factors attributable to the high rate of diabetes among African Americans include a high rate of obesity and overweight; hypertension; high cholesterol and smoking. Research has shown that African Americans are more vulnerable to diabetes than their white counterparts due to their direct genetic predisposition or unfavorable gene-environmental interactions(Asmelash & Asmelash, 2019). Genetic traits, insulin resistance, and high prevalence of obesity are attributable to the high prevalence of diabetes in the population. Health and Population Sample Essay

Through biostatistics, research entities such as the Center for Disease Control have been able to identify factors that contribute to the high prevalence of diabetes among African Americans. Apart from the genetic predisposition, the high prevalence of diabetes among African Americans is also attributable to lifestyle factors such as unhealthy eating patterns, smoking, and lack of physical exercise (King et al., 2018). Additionally, research shows that African Americans experience a high rate of diabetes complications due to racial disparities in healthcare and poor glycemic control (Asmelash & Asmelash, 2019).Health and Population Sample Essay
Therefore, through biostatistics, the risk factors affecting the high prevalence of diabetes among African Americans can be addressed. For instance, community education about the importance of adoptinghealthy lifestyles such as good nutrition and physical exercises can lower the high rate of diabetes in the population.
