Healthcare Change Proposal Essay he first barrier is time restraints and fear of infringing on time for other activities. Nurses typically have a busy schedule and this could make them resistant to participation in the legislative process as they perceive it as adding more work to their already busy schedules. The second barrier gender since most nurses are predominantly female. There is a foundational assumption that nursing is embedded in the traditional role of women causing the opinion of nurses to be devalued when compared to the opinions of physicians. Besides that, women have historically been assumed to have less interest in the legislative process thereby creating the wrong perception that their opinion is less valuable (Huff, Kline & Peterson, 2015). The third barrier is lack of avenues through which to express their opinions and be involved. There is a dearth of lobby groups specifically targeted at advancing the interests of nurses thus making it difficult for them to be involved in the legislative process. For instance, it is not uncommon for nurses who champion interests contrary to those of their employers to miss out on promotions or even lose their jobs. The identified barriers can be addressed through three main strategies. Firstly, education the nurses and preparing them for activism. Secondly, engaging facilitators of political action. Thirdly, affiliation with professional nursing organizations that can protect the nurses against retaliation and can offer a platform for expressing themselves (Stanhope & Lancaster, 2014).
