Leadership style reflective essay
Briefly summarize why you selected each self-assessment and the results you obtained on each assessment.
Three tests were undertaken. The first test was personality assessment that made use of rating scales for personal traits. The personality test reveals that I have a healer/INFP personality type. I am an imaginative idealist guided by my own core beliefs and values. As a healer, I am more focused on the future possibilities than the current state of affairs. I am compassionate, caring and sensitive, and deeply concerned about others. The personality type indicates that I am introverted, intuitive, feeling and perceiving. I am introverted since I am energized by time alone. I am intuitive since I focus on concepts and ideas instead of details and facts. I am feeling because I make decisions based on values and feelings. I am perceiving because I prefer to be flexible and spontaneous rather than organized and planned. My healer personality, gentle compassion and sympathetic idealism have allowed me to thrive in the nursing profession (Kroeger&Thuesen, 2013). Leadership Style Reflective Essay
The second test was a learning styles assessment conducted using VARK tool. The results indicate that I have a preference for visual learning and perform better if information is depicted graphically as labeled diagrams, flow charts, graphs, charts, and maps. I learn best from visual approaches and graphical presentations that convey and highlight information. As a visual learner, I typically understand and remember things by sight since I like to see what I am learning and am able to picture what I am learning in my head. As a visual learner, I am usually clean and neat. I often close my eyes to remember or visualize something, and will find something to watch if I am bored. I have difficulties with spoken instruction and sounds easily distract me (Billings& Halstead, 2015). Leadership Style Reflective Essay
The third test was a values assessment conducted using Rokeach Values Survey. The assessment applies a classification systems of values divided into two as terminal and instrumental values with each one having 18 individual values for a total of 36 values. The terminal values refer to the desirable end-states of existence in terms of goals to be achieved in the course of a lifetime. The instrumental values refer to the preferable modes of behavior to achieve the terminal values. The results reveal that my most important terminal values are salvation, wisdom, national security protection and equality. Salvation comes first because I believe that God is most important in my life and I cannot succeed without acknowledging God. Wisdom comes second because it allows me to make the right decisions and live a life without regret. National security comes third because I want to know that my family is safe and protected. Equality comes fourth because I believe that we are all equal before God, and every person should have a chance at an equal and happy life. The results further reveal that my most important instrumental values are ambition, independence, and responsibility. Ambition comes first because it allows me to make something good of my life. Independence comes second because I believe that self-sufficiency and self-reliance will allow me to achieve my dreams. Responsibility comes third because I wand to be dependable, relying on my strength to pull my weight (Rokeach, 2008).
Identify the leadership style that closely aligns to your philosophy of care, and explain what appeals to you about that style.
My philosophy of care is that it is both a science and art. It is a science that regularly discovers new knowledge to inform care. It is an art since it requires skill and imagination when faced with challenges requiring innovation. In addition, I believe that care should be a collaborative effort not limited by values, spiritual beliefs and gender. A nurse cannot achieve good care outcomes if he/she practices in isolation. The nurse must collaborate with other medical personnel, patient and family to achieve favorable outcomes. The leadership style that closely aligns with my philosophy of care is transformational leadership style. This is a relational leadership style that focuses on people and relationships to achieve higher satisfaction levels, commitment, productivity, work effectiveness, health and wellbeing, while reducing stress. Through applying this leadership style, a nurse will focusing on professional responsibilities, effective communication and being an effective role model. This style favors and encourages collaboration among stakeholders thereby allowing for the best decisions to be made even as efforts are synergized (Boamah, 2018).
Reflect on how you might incorporate elements of that particular style as you exercise leadership in a practice or health care organization setting. Leadership Style Reflective Essay
Transformational leadership style presents a work environment that encourages collaboration. In fact, it influences performance and impact through creating a supportive environment where responsibility is shared. In addition, it earns genuine admiration, respect and trust. Besides that, it encourages action that shifts away from personal interests towards organization interests. Elements of transformational leadership style can be incorporated through four approaches. The first approach is to personalize management by giving individualized consideration to all stakeholders. This ensures that interactions with others are adapted to their different skills, needs and personalities. The second approach is to provide intellectual stimulation while encouraging creativity. This includes challenging assumptions, reacting to failures and mistakes in a positive manner, removing barriers to change, and providing resources. The third approach is to inspire, motivate and guide through setting goals and strategies. This occurs by connecting tasks to a greater purpose, celebrating success, and communicating with optimism and confidence. The fourth is to act as a role model by exhibiting the ideal behavior. This involves acting with ethical standards and integrity through words and behavior. The rest of the team is likely to subconsciously and automatically emulate the exhibited actions (Broome & Marshall, 2020).
Discuss any particular areas for improvement the assessments helped you identify and some steps for improving your leadership capabilities. Leadership Style Reflective Essay
The assessments reveal that in addition to technical skills, a nurse requires soft leadership skills in order to function efficiently. However, being a leader is not easy with the self-reflection revealing areas that could do with some improvements. The first area is improving trust by focusing on specific outcomes and trusting other to do their jobs, and not micromanaging them. Having periodic checks is fine instead of seeking every detail. In essence, building trust would focus on watching how others share information and sharing key pieces of information. The second area of managing connectivity, especially with the modern mobile connectivity. Constant connectivity allows for feedback and access, but creates the perception of omnipresent leadership that could be resented by others. The constant connectivity has created a hurried environment where multitasking has become the norm and there is a continuous need always accomplish more and faster even when there is no apparent need. This results in stressed and overcommitted leaders. This area can be addressed through setting and following up on reasonable expectations. The third area is stagnancy, being stuck in doing things the same way and losing the desire for innovation and change simply because the old way works. This area can be addressed through accepting and acting on feedback. The final area is needing to be liked. It is natural to want to be liked and to be in everyone’s good favor. However, popularity does not always imply right. As a leader, it is important to make the best decision even if unpopular and always taking the time to explain so as to earn respect (Broome & Marshall, 2020). Leadership Style Reflective Essay
