Respond with a conversation between you (as a nurse) and the patient using therapeutic communication. At least 2 therapeutic communication techniques must be used (i.e. touch, active listening, etc.). Assignment should be no more than 2 pages.

Case #1- The patient was admitted 2 days ago with a diagnosis of cancer. She was informed by her doctor that a course of radiation and chemotherapy was her best option. She became very upset and frightened about the proposed treatment and stated that she wasn’t sure if she would go through with it. The nurse approaches her to discuss how she is feeling today. Nurse: “How are you doing today, Miss Smith. I was wondering how you were feeling about undergoing radiation and chemotherapy?”
Patient: “I don’t know. I’m not as scared as I was when I got here, but I have a lot of questions about it.”
Nurse: “It sounds like you have given it some thought. I’m sure Dr. Jones could talk with you and answer some of your questions. Would you like to do that?”
Patient: “I guess so. What do you think?”
Think of a few ways the nurse could respond.

Case scenario 1
The nurse response to Mrs. Smith can be:

Nurse: “Yes. I think you should talk to Dr. Jones. What would you like to talk about?”The response from the nurse is a therapeutic communication technique example of giving broad openings. This helps the client in taking the initiative to introduce the topic to the nurse and emphasize on the role of the client in the interaction.

Nurse: “Yes, I understand.”This demonstrates the use of accepting therapeutic communication technique. This shows that the nurse acknowledges what the client is saying and affirms that they heard them. Moreover, the patient will feel that the nurse is listening to them and taking them seriously and hence will be more open and trusting to the receptive care.
Case scenario 2
A nurse could use one of these ideas to start a therapeutic conversation with the elderly patient sitting in bed taking a nap with a tray of uneaten food on the bedside table.
Nurse: “How are you doing today, Mr. Mati? How are you feeling today, it appears like you haven’t touched your food?”This demonstrates that the nurse is making an observation and verbalizes what is observed.
Nurse: “How are you doing today, Mr. Mati? Why do you continually refuse to eat your food? You know it is not good for your health, how can I help you?”This idea would help the client to recognize his behavior and compare it with the perception of the nurse. It also involves offering self.
