I also verify that all required course approvals are in place from my faculty and practice mentor. I note with gratitude that I was able to successfully complete my required practice hours due to the generosity in teaching and energy of my preceptor nurse or mentor. At no time did I feel like not being listened to. My mentor reviewed each case individually with me, helping me to note the salient points in history taking, physical examination, testing, diagnosis, and treatment. Under her supervision, she allowed me to practice what I had been taught only theoretically in class.

There were a few drawbacks and disappointments here and there. But this would be expected in such a setting. One of them is that there are patients who flatly refuse to be assessed by a student. Others even refuse to be examined while the student nurse is standing there. That meant that at such times I had no option but to leave the consultation room to give such patients the privacy that is their right. The other drawback was that the preceptor nurse under whom I covered the practical placement was extremely busy almost all the time. From my own assessment and casual observation, I can place this to down to understaffing. Despite all this, however, my mentor always created time for me, even where there seemed to be none.
