Provide an overview of the study and describe the strategy that was used to select the sample from the population. Evaluate the effectiveness of the sampling method selected. Provide support for your answer
Samburova et al. (2018) conducted a study whose objective was to determine the levels of carbonyl in exhaled breath among e-cigarette users. The study also purposed to estimate the uptake of particular aldehydes (acetaldehyde and formaldehyde) in the respiratory tract. This study was influenced by background information from previous studies on the existence of aldehydes in e-cigarette emissions and concerns on their possible toxicity (Samburova et al., 2018). The researchers selected study participants through purposive sampling whereby, the researcher’s judgement was used to select the most useful population based on the objective of the study. Purposive sampling is effective when a researcher wants to obtain additional knowledge regarding a more specific phenomenon as opposed to making statistical inferences. For instance, in this case, Samburova et al. (2018) wanted to obtain more knowledge on the extent to which exposure to carbonyl happens when using e-cigarettes and if carbonyl levels and other harmful aldehydes increased in exhaled breath of e-cigarette users. Thus, a total of twelve participants (five men and seven women) who were cigarette users (inclusion criteria) aged between 21-65 years were recruited to participate in the study (Samburova et al., 2018). Using this sampling method, it can be deduced that the sample population was not a statistical representation of the larger population since the selection of the participants was because they fit the profile (cigarette users) that was required for the study. The researchers found that when compared to pre-exposed breath, exhaled e-cigarette breath had significantly high levels of aldehydes. However, since Samburova et al. (2018) used purposive sampling, this finding can be qualitatively generalized but does provide a statistical representation of the larger population.
