The interviewed practitioners included a family nurse practitioner and a certified nurse-midwife, all in the Illinois state. The family nurse practitioner normally attends patients with respiratory infections, skin conditions, bladder infections, immunizations, among other acute medical needs for my patient while the certified nurse-midwife provides gynecological care and full-scope midwifery care. Both practitioners are satisfied with their current roles in their settings. The family nurse practitioner holds certifications in Family Nurse Practitioner-Board Certified (FNP-BC) from ANCC certification and APRN Board Certification from the American Nurses Credentialing Center. The certified nurse-midwife is certified by the National Certification Corporation and the American Midwifery Certification Board. In addition, both practitioners have prescriptive authority and prescribe controlled substances (Schedules III-V controlled substances). The practitioners were credentialed and privileged by the health system and are members of various professional organizations. The two practitioners highly regard the role of a DNP and believe that DNPs make significant changes in nursing practice through research and addressing the shortage of nursing experts in the field. Interview with a Family Nurse Practitioner, Illinois State
The first interviewee was a family nurse practitioner (FNP) in Illinois state. According to this family nurse practitioner, the key motivation that made her select the family practice specialty was because she wanted a specialty that would allow her to see a variety of patients from different acuity and different age groups. She wanted to work in an unlimited specialty, where she could spend more time with the patients and make a follow-up for the patients.
The FNP works with a retail clinic. A typical day during care delivery for this FNP involves attending patients with respiratory infections, skin conditions, bladder infections, immunizations, screening of chronic disease, consultation on smoking cessation, and weight management, among other acute medical needs for the patients. According to this family nurse practitioner, working in a family practice specialty is very satisfying. This is because the specialty and the current retail clinic allow her to care for diverse patients with multiple and complex health needs. The practitioner further added that following up on the patients and witnessing their full recovery reveals how much impact she makes on their health, which is very satisfying.
The FNP holds certifications in Family Nurse Practitioner-Board Certified (FNP-BC) from ANCC certification, and APRN Board Certification from the American Nurses Credentialing Center.
The FNP works in collaboration with a supervising physician in the clinic as per Illinois Scope of Practice Policy. Her prescriptive authority is outlined in the collaborative agreement with her supervising physician. As per the collaborative agreement, the FNP prescribes prescription medicals and Schedules III-V controlled substances. The FNP emphasized that she must practice as per the agreement with the supervising physician because this is the required practice authority as per Illinois Scope of Practice Policy. She collaborates well with my supervising physician where sometimes the supervising physician delegates some roles without supervising me.
The family nurse practitioner is credentialed and privileged by a health system. Her education, training, licensure and experience were verified by the human resources department in collaboration with the nursing department in the organization she works for. As a result, the FNP was authorized to practice as per her appropriate scope of practice basing on her credentials.
The nurse practitioner is a member of the Illinois Society for Advanced Practice Nursing (ISAPN). ISAPN is a professional organization that promotes and advocates for Advanced Practice Nurses.
The FNP seemed to have a good understanding regarding the DNP degree. According to her, a DNP degree is the highest level of education in the nursing field and it equips the nurse with the highest level of nursing expertise and leadership expertise. The nurse practitioner further added that a DNP provides practice-based training by applying the highest level of nursing knowledge and influencing healthcare outcomes using research, effective leadership, direct patient care, and health policies. This clearly indicates that she has a good grasp of what a DNP degree is.
The FNP has not enrolled for an DNP degree yet. However, she reported that her next academic objective is to enroll for a DPN degree in order to become a nurse educator and perform research. She strongly believes that a doctorate degree in nursing will open many doors and dynamic opportunities for her including, consultation and entrepreneurship opportunities. The interviewed family nurse practitioner believes that nurses with a doctoral degree are required to address the shortages of nursing faculty with a doctoral degree, improve educational expectations, and also address the national issues regarding healthcare quality.
Interview with a Certified Nurse Midwife (CNM), Illinois State
The second interviewee was a Certified Nurse Midwife (CNM), from Illinois State. According to her, the motivation behind her becoming a Certified Nurse Midwife (CNM) is because she had a passion to practice in a specialty she could work anywhere in the world. She reported that she figured out that babies are delivered everywhere and hence this provided her with an opportunity to practice as a midwife anywhere in the world. The versatility of the midwifery profession and her passion to care for newborns is what motivated her to become a certified nurse-midwife.
This advanced practice nurse (APN) is a certified midwife at Women’s Health Care Center, where she provides gynecological care and full-scope midwifery care. Her typical day involves attending approximately 15 patients where more than 96% of the patients are females even though she occasionally attends men for sexually transmitted infections, infertility issues, and other sexual health conditions. For women, the most common type of care services provided includes pap smears, postpartum services, birth control consults, pregnancy testing and counseling, infertility issues, STDs diagnosis and treatment, menopause issues, IUD and Nexplanon insertions. The APN confessed that she finds the role of a Certified Nurse Midwife very rewarding and satisfying. The most rewarding aspect is that she gets to help people and improve their reproductive health. In particular, helping women with infertility issues brings so much joy due to the positive impact the services bring in the lives of her patients.
The APN holds certifications in Women’s Health Care Nurse Practitioner (WHNP) from the National Certification Corporation, as well as National certification from the American Midwifery Certification Board.

This is because by having a DNP one can conduct research to support healthcare changes and policy changes, and at the same time hold leadership roles. She conveyed that she has been thinking of enrolling for a DPN degree soonest possible, and possibly within the next two years. After completion of her DNP, she hopes to become an expert in clinical research and use the latest evidence to support practice changes. She emphasized her strong belief that DNP nurses play a big role in addressing the shortage of nursing experts in the field. This is because they add the very much required expertise in the health sector. The interview was concluded by the certified nurse-midwife noting that DNPs have led to significant changes in healthcare and definitely, becoming a DNP should be the dream for every nurse.
