I had to do a great deal of personal reflection before I embarked on the non-traditional learning environment within Walden University. Before enrolling, I needed to be deliberate in my decision to further my educational pursuits, while accepting responsibility not only for my learning, but the overall impact this journey would have on my life and my family. I needed to develop a plan that would help me align my professional and educational goals along with my personal responsibilities while maintaining motivation and a growth mindset.

Learning Methodologies

In preparation for my pursuits in Walden, I first had to dig deeply to discover my personal learning style. If I could understand how I learned, I would have a greater chance at being successful in my educational pursuits. What I realized was that I prefer active learning, learning by doing, which aligns with traditional learning. Kauffman (2015, p. 8) asserted that these learning preferences did not affect success. Although I believe I have adapted to online learning, the question remains about whether I have the knowledge and skills to perform in the real world of informatics without having hands on throughout my degree. Do any of you feel that it is more challenging to learn technical skills without hands-on application experience? If so, how do you ensure that you are retaining this knowledge for use during your practicum? I feel that we are given a wealth of information, and I am concerned that it will not all be retained once that time comes.

Time Management Strategy

One of the benefits of online learning is the flexibility, but with flexibility one must have self-discipline. “Integrating online learning into your already busy schedule can be difficult” (Laureate Education, 2018, p.2). I realized that even though online learning does provide me with the flexibility I needed, it does not teach me time management. Time management is more than scheduling a set time to study. since we all have busy lifestyles, we must take into consideration internal and external factors that will impact this schedule. I realize that I must also balance my discipline with flexibility to be successful. I have learned from past experiences that not allowing flexibility into my plan can be counterproductive to my progress. What are some time management strategies that have been effective for you?

There is a quote written by Online College (2020) “You get out of it what you put into it”. This will be my mantra as I push forward, whether tapping into resources from Walden or networking to obtain needed information to achieve in my educational goals. In truth, it is a solid mantra to apply in every aspect of my life.

R, I enjoyed reading your post and I do agree with you that active learning is my stronger area as well. I was intrigued to read however, “online learning can be as effective as traditional classroom learning even if learning style preferences vary” (Kauffman, 2015). Adaptation to online learning seems to be the key for most people to be successful in this environment, however I also agree with you that the challenges of learning informatics in this setting could pose some difficulties. In a study by DeBourgh (2004) nurses have been accustomed to face-to -face, didactic learning environments, I think that is essential for any technical skill. To be successful, we need to be both book knowledgeable and didactic knowledgeable.

One of the nice things about this type of platform according to Walden is “online learning is flexible in that you may participate and work on assignments at any hour convenient to you. However, your online courses will have specific due dates each week…for submitting written assignments” (Laureate Education, 2018). I think this is imperative for the success of an online student. This will help each of us to still develop good time management skills and still afford us flexibility to be, wife, mother, nurse, friend and have time for our own sanity. Good luck with everything and I applaud you for wanting to do informatics, computers and IT is not my thing. Thank you for wanting to do that.

I’m grateful that I’ve always been flexible when it comes to learning styles. You will thrive during practicum as an active learner. In regards to learning styles, Deale (2019) stated that ” it’s hard to argue that attention to how students prefer to learn is not important since students make choices about where they wish to learn (in terms of the institutions they choose and the programs they select), about how they study, and about how their needs or desires with regard to learning can best be met (p.1). Similarly to you, Walden was the best fit for my life. We are only in week two, and we are still merging our personal learning styles with the program. It is an adjustment that I believe everyone is making, no matter how they feel they learn best.

As far as time management, I would just make sure you allow yourself time to step away. Every week, I make sure I read through requirements for assignments, discussions, and the due dates. I may not get started on it right away, but often I spend days completing assignments. It’s not uncommon for me to just close my laptop and walk away. We are all professionals, we have obligations outside of school, and its important to factor in time for these unforeseen circumstances which brings me to my next point; try to avoid procrastinating at all costs. Procrastination is a serious and is perceived by students, faculty, and academic support professionals alike as an immediate threat to a students academic success (2019). On-line learning is a reason in itself there could be power outages, software malfunction, or a number of other reasons that you not be able to submit your assignments on time. You’ve made an investment in yourself going back to school, protect your investment.

How many courses are you taking? The inappropriate scheduling of multiple courses may affect student engagement and learning performance…(He, Dong, Zheng, & Lin, 2019). If time management is something that concerns you I would start with the minimum and work my way up. I know we all want to finish as soon as possible, but if you overwhelm yourself before you handle your issues with time-managemnt you may do more harm than good. Like I said before, give yourself time to adjust to your new life and schedule. Give family and friends and “heads up” about your new reality, build up your support system, take a deep breath, and take it one module at a time.

I also struggle with finding ways to best manage my time for this new journey of pursuing a degree online. As a single mother of two that works full time, it can lead to anxiety and a feeling of being overwhelmed. A great tip I have found that works for me is to write all the due dates in my daily calender with a monthly view. I have my work schedule, my kids activity schedule and school breaks, any doctor appointments, and even dates with friends. Every night I open the calender and evaluate what is most important to tackle first, prioritizing my day (Derrick, 2019). Leaving room for last minute add on tasks and time for myself can often seem impossible, but by prioritizing and knowing deadlines I can know what is a “must do” and a “want to do”. Another important tip I use and Derrick suggests is removing distractions and not multitasking (2019). I focus on one task at a time and see it to completion or as far as I can in the time period I have alloted for the task.

Retaining information without a hands-on approach is not something I have struggled with at this time. I can adapt my learning style, but realize not everyone can adapt as easily. Online College’s tips tell us to be successful, we must be open minded and willing to try to adapt to change (n.d.). Try taking notes by hand while you are watching videos and while reading instead of highlighting information you think may be important.

And as you begin your program it’s helpful to remember that work in an online environment can be different than work in a face-to-face environment. MALE SPEAKER: For example, in face-to-face communication you can draw upon other senses to communicate to or interpret works from another person. Body language, intonation, and facial expression, all help others understand what you’re trying to express. In an online environment, you can’t rely upon those non-verbal cues, your written communication is the main way to interact and connect with others at Walden. In the absence of face-to-face contact, written tone plays an important role in how your words and ideas will be received by others. FEMALE SPEAKER: During your degree program, you’ll be communicating with faculty, staff, and classmates in a variety of written ways, like email, discussion board posts, and instant messaging. One of the first things you’ll do is post an introduction of yourself. Look at this example, MALE SPEAKER: What are your first impressions from this post? First impressions mean a lot. And in an online classroom your writing is the most significant way you’ll communicate with and get to know your faculty and classmates. FEMALE SPEAKER: You’re online Walden classroom is an academic environment and the interactions that you have in the classroom are distinct from other online spaces. During your academic journey you’ll be working alongside professionals over months and sometimes years, so it benefits you to get to know them and let them get to know you in a manner appropriate to the environment. You can develop an introduction that fully describes who you are. Look at this posting again, rewritten in a more appropriate manner. MALE SPEAKER: This introduction contains the same information but with a more thoughtful word choice. It carries a whole different tone and makes a very different first impression. With practice and a conscious effort, this manner of writing will become easier for you to achieve. Here are a few tips to remember for communicating online. Body language and voice tone tell us a lot about a person, but these interpretive aspects don’t transmit in writing, so choose your words carefully. Try reading your discussion board post aloud. You can catch small errors and awkward phrases that way. Never post something in a discussion board that you would not say if a person was standing in front of you. In your classroom, you’ll be working in a professional academic atmosphere, your email should reflect this respectful, scholarly tone. Here are some basic tips to abide by. FEMALE SPEAKER: Include a subject line, without your year email maybe delete. Clear language in your subject line allows the recipient to quickly sort through and prioritizing email. MALE SPEAKER: Include the email thread by using the reply option. When you receive an email, review the thread carefully before providing your response. Including the email interaction that preceded your response allows the reader to refresh their memory and more accurately respond to your question. FEMALE SPEAKER: Use a signature block at the bottom of your email. If should contain any contact information and other pertinent details needed to reach you. Use spelling and grammar check. It will help your writing appear professional and reflective attention to detail. MALE SPEAKER: And last, remember that timely response is part of professional communication. And at Walden University there is an expectation that emails will get a response within 48 hours for both faculty and students. In online communication an email is comparable to sending a letter.
