Group 4 Evidence Based Project “Family-Based Treatment for Adolescents with Eating Disorders” is of professional quality, logically structured and understandable for the reader. The presentation framework is efficient and simple, not overwhelming the reader. The topic is interesting and applicable to several of the nursing graduate programs.

Mental illness is known to be a taboo in many families and communities. Providing education, obtained through research related to these topics, may contribute to overcome the social stigma around the diagnosis of these conditions. This is why these nurses support the selection and discussion of the topic by group 4.

The prevalence data is relevant. It presents current data demonstrating how these disorders affect both genders although in different proportions. These nurses consider that incidence data although from 2013 is relevant and agree with authors that current data collection may be underscored by the social stigma around mental illness. Clinical significance section could be more concise, although the information in the slide is very important, these nurses consider that providing information regarding eating disorders medical complications and benefits or impact of therapies proposed may be enough to present to the reader. The case study is brief and contain all the information to guide the reader through the clinical problem developing in the project. It contains patient’s statistics including past medical history and expected outcome. The PICO question is well structured. It contains all PICO components and each component isstated clearly.Response EBP to another group Essay

The search of the literatureis clear and organized. It includes the search strategies, including databases, keywords and limits to the search. The time limit is wider than recommended, from 2010 to 2019, the recommended time limit is five years. Although, these nurses agree with authors about the lack of relevant studies addressing this topic which would explain the time limit chosen. Also, authors could have included their criteria for the selection of articles to discuss in the assignment.

Articles selected for the critique are applicable to the topic. Svavarsdottir and Gisladottir (2018) study investigated how family oriented therapeutic conversations helped to address eating disorders within the family frame, which is pertinent to the topic and addresses the intervention component. Kimber et al. (2014) studied the barriers preventing health providers to implement evidence-based practice related to family-based therapy within the frame of eating disorder treatment teams. This study is relevant to the topic. Hollesen et al, (2013) investigated how family therapy for adolescents with eating disorders is beneficial in the management of the condition, which is related to the topic and addresses the intervention component of the PICO. Spettigue et al, (2015) found how the proposed interventions were appropriated for the management of eating disorders. This study is applicable to the topic. Dalle et al, (2019) addressed cognitive behavioral therapy in adolescents with an eating disorder which is significant for the comparison component of the project. This article is relevant to the topic.Response EBP to another group Essay

The articles that Group 4 selected are of clinical relevance to address treatments that can be applied to adolescents with eating disorders. Although informative, the three qualitative studies resulted in less reliable evidence. According to Polit and Beck (2017), based on the evidence hierarchy, qualitative studies are difficult to evaluate intervention effectiveness since they come from a single cohort study. The group did a great job in reading and dissecting the articles to identify the study’s strengths and weaknesses.

Recommendations regarding this intervention in clinical practice are to educate adolescents within the school system on eating disorders. As mentioned in Group 4’s presentation early intervention is recommended. Enforce and educate doctor’s offices to talk to the child’s parent(s) on how to identify eating disorders. This can be conducted at the adolescent’s annual check-ups since parents are present for these visits.

Even though the research had barriers such as small sampling, the studies concluded with positive outcomes on both forms of therapy. Based on the group’s presentation slides for “Summary of Evidence,” the group captured in-depth information. Response EBP to another group Essay

The summariesof findings were coherent and captured the true objectives of the PICO question.

To provide quality and credible care, evidence-based research uses interventions that have been adequately studied and tested. Interprofessional research collaborations allow the opportunity to draw on the strengths of different professional backgrounds so topics can be thoroughly addressed. For example, Bandura’s social cognitive theory is used in nursing research but it is actually based on a psychology model. Nursing and interprofessional research collaborations enables phenomena to be studied for the improvement of the healthcare field, ultimately, benefiting the care provided to patients, families and communities.

The “Family-Based Treatment for Adolescents with Eating Disorders” Group 4 Evidence Based Project by Group 4 is logically structured and presents professional quality. It is also simple and easy to understand by all types of readers even without the nursing background knowledge. The topic is relatable in the contemporary society and interesting as well considering the increased cases of eating disorders among adolescents. It is also applicable in multiple nursing fields. The provision of research regarding eating disorders in adolescents is important in creating awareness on prevention and management. The evidence-based research project by the group is also relevant in reducing stigma and bullying related to eating disorders and body image.Response EBP to another group Essay

The prevalence data provided in the research is relevant and sufficiently compares the females and male risk rates. The section contains current data which is applicable in the contemporary society. The data on eating disorder incidence is also current and acceptable in drawing conclusions having been obtained from a 2013 research. The research also considers the stigma associated with Bulimia and Anorexia eating disorders and the chances of not reporting which limit the information on incidence rates per 100,000 persons per year. On the other, the clinical significance presents concise information with research statistics on the treatment of eating disorders. The provision of the medical complications as well as the implications and benefits of family therapies is essential for nurses in managing eating disorders in the clinical setting.

Notably, the case study is simple, short and contains the relevant patient information that develops an appropriate intervention for the client. It guides the reader through the medical history of the patient, the clinical problem and statistics and therefore, it provides a sufficient general overview of the client. The PICO question of the study is effectively articulated covering the population, intervention, comparison and the outcome anticipated in the case study. However, the inclusion of time in the question could have impacted the study’s validity and reliability further. The literature searchsection is also well organized and presented with effectively backed up evidence to the claims which validate the research. However, the use of data from 2010 to 2019 provides a wide gap which undermines the validity of the research since clinical research is limited to 5 years.Response EBP to another group Essay

The selected articles are relevant to the evidence-based research and support the study topic. For instance, Svavarsdottir and Gisladottir (2018) article is about the application of family oriented therapeutic conversations in the management of eating disorders while Kimber et al. (2014) research is focused on the obstacles hindering the management of these diseases using the family-based therapy. Hollesen et al, (2013) research also addresses the research topic and helps in answering the PICO question since it investigates the benefits of family therapy on adolescents with eating disorders. On the contrary, the comparison intervention, cognitive behavior therapy is addressed by Dalle et al, (2019) article. In general, Spettigue et al, (2015) notes that the management of these disorders can be done using the interventions proposed.Response EBP to another group Essay

The above articles are clinically relevant in informing about the management of eating disorders in adolescents. The research explores the articles in depth to determine the shortcomings and the strengths. However, the use of qualitative studies undermines the effectiveness of the evidence since these studies are based on a single cohort study. The group’s recommendations propose the education of adolescents on eating disorders in schools as well as education and enforcement of nutritional information in doctors’ offices. Moreover, early identification and intervention is recommended through annual checkups. This information demonstrates in-depth research and understanding by the group.

The findings summaries supported the PICO question and were coherent. They provide comparisons of individual interventions and family therapy interventions with reliable evidence from previous studies as well as current study from the case study. In addition, the research reveals the engagement of multiple healthcare personnel in management of eating disorders in adolescents including the psychiatrists, physical therapists, nutritionists and primary care providers among others.Response EBP to another group Essay
