Role of the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) as it pertains to the PMHNP
Safe prescribing practices are important in ensuring positive patient outcomes. Multiple national guidelines and standards by government agencies reinforce safe prescribing and direct practitioners in proving high quality and safe prescriptions. The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) is a federal law enforcement agency of the United States responsible for safe prescription of controlled substances. The agency enforces the laws and regulations regarding controlled substances and as well as oversees the legal punishment of individuals or organizations involved in related offences (DEA, n.d.). In addition, it oversees the prescription of controlled substances through the assignment of the DEA number to PMHNP which allows them the prescription authority. It also inhibits trafficking and distribution of controlled substances illegally thus engaging practitioners in the prevention of drug abuse in the country. It also facilitates creation of awareness on controlled drug substances which is facilitated by the PMHNPs. Role of the Drug Enforcement Administration Essay

DEA numbers are provided by the DEA agency to allow prescription authorities to the PMHNPs. According to the DEA (n.d) the number is an identifier assigned for writing of prescriptions for controlled dugs. PMHNPs with these numbers authenticate and track controlled substances to ensure safety and security of the users and as well prevent abuse. They also ensure the adherence to legal standards set by the government regarding the prescription, distribution and use of controlled drug substances. On the other hand, PMHNPs verify prescription information of patients for validation that ensures professional practice and safety as well as determine the circumstances under prescription and their appropriateness(American Psychiatric Association, 2013).
