Assignment: The Nurse Leader as Knowledge Worker

The term “knowledge worker” was first coined by management consultant and author Peter Drucker in his book, The Landmarks of Tomorrow (1959). Drucker defined knowledge workers as high-level workers who apply theoretical and analytical knowledge, acquired through formal training, to develop products and services. Does this sound familiar? The Nurse Leader as Knowledge Worker Essay

Nurses are very much knowledge workers. What has changed since Drucker’s time are the ways that knowledge can be acquired. The volume of data that can now be generated and the tools used to access this data have evolved significantly in recent years and helped healthcare professionals (among many others) to assume the role of knowledge worker in new and powerful ways.

In this Assignment, you will consider the evolving role of the nurse leader and how this evolution has led nurse leaders to assume the role of knowledge worker. You will prepare a PowerPoint presentation with an infographic (graphic that visually represents information, data, or knowledge. Infographics are intended to present information quickly and clearly.) to educate others on the role of nurse as knowledge worker.

To Prepare:

Review the concepts of informatics as presented in the Resources.

The Assignment:

Explain the concept of a knowledge worker.

Define and explain nursing informatics and highlight the role of a nurse leader as a knowledge worker.

Develop a simple infographic to help explain these concepts.

NOTE: For guidance on infographics, including how to create one in PowerPoint, see “How to Make an Infographic in PowerPoint” presented in the Resources.

Your PowerPoint should Include the hypothetical scenario you originally shared in the Discussion Forum. Include your examination of the data that you could use, how the data might be accessed/collected, and what knowledge might be derived from that data. Be sure to incorporate feedback received from your colleagues’ responses. The previous scenario is:

Application of data to problem-solving

Data and informatics is fast changing how nurses function in their professional capacity. In fact, advances in technology have offered nurses and medical professions the capacity to collect, analyze and leverage data in a more effective manger to influence how medical personnel function, resources are managed, and care is delivered. Consequently, any person would be hard-pressed to come across an aspect of medical care that has yet to be influenced by data and informatics as prompted in this information age. One specific area of medical area that has been significantly impacted by data and informatics is nursing practice. Though the nursing mission and objectives remain the same, practice has been strongly influenced by informatics with specific attention to the communication and accuracy of patient care and data (Pokorski, 2018). The present essay discusses the value of health informatics in nursing based on the presented scenario. The Nurse Leader as Knowledge Worker Essay

The scenario involves a 71 year old female patient who was admitted for nursing care after being diagnosed with pneumonia. In addition, she had a history of heart disease. She denies being in pain, but complains of increasing apnea, cough and fatigue. A review of her vitals reveals that her pulse oximetry is at 93%, respiratory rate at 28/min, heart rate at 96/min, blood pressure at 148/92 and temperature at 101oF. The attending nurse would then collect data to help in assessing, diagnosing, identifying outcomes, implementing care, and evaluation for the patient. Firstly, vital signs are evaluated to show changes in oxygen saturation, heart rate, systolic and diastolic pressure, and fever, as well as changed in intake and output records for fluid volume overload. Secondly, the data would be evaluated to determine the diagnosis, with the skin integrity and fall risk noted. Thirdly, the expected outcome is identified based on individualized care. Fourthly, a plan for care is developed, which prescribed the interventions and strategies anticipated to achieved the expected outcome. This would include having appropriate surveillance at regular intervals and ensuring that the plan of care is matched to the collected data. Fifthly, implementation of the intervention identified in the care plan, with documented professional analysis of the diagnosis and data, as well as health promotion and teaching being documented. Finally, evaluation is conducted on the progress towards the outcomes being attained. The Nurse Leader as Knowledge Worker Essay

The scenario show how nurses can make good use of data to improve nursing care plans. In this case, data is show to improve nurse actions, documentation and reasoning. To be more precise, the collected patient data has enhanced the nurse’s ability to conduct retrospective reviews thereby gaining a better understanding of the patient’s condition in relation to the interventions applied and anticipated outcomes. Under these circumstances, it becomes clear that data and informatics creates opportunities for nurses to systematically improve care quality. In addition, it enables the nurses to apply a reasoning model that facilitates the expansion of thought processes, and enables them to arrive at informed broad recommendations for care approaches (Sang &Dearholt, 2018; Tolleson et al., 2019).

It is evident that competency in data management and informatics helps nurses to use technology and information to communicate, support decision-making, mitigate health care errors and manage knowledge. In essence, nurses can leverage data and informatics to provide safe patient care since access to aggregate data helps them to make informed practice decisions even as informatics allows them to correctly interpret the data (Sang &Dearholt, 2018; Tolleson et al., 2019). As a result, data and informatics support nurses in their professional functions. The Nurse Leader as Knowledge Worker Essay
