The terms ‘leaders and ‘managers’ have typically been used interchangeably among nurses and viewed as being synonymous. However, the two terms are fundamental different. A manager is a formal role or status that a nurse takes on in which he or she is assigned by someone else. As a manager, the nurse is expected to take on definite responsibilities and conduct specific duties as part of a formal organization and assigned for that position. For instance, a nurse can be assigned as a nurse manager in which case he or she would be expected to present a staffing plan for the nurses and facilitate communication with the organization management. It is important to note that for nurse managers, their responsibilities are delegated and defined in the job description and they take formal responsibilities for their subordinates (Marshall & Broome, 2017).

On the other hand, a leader is an informal position that does not have any formal authority. Rather, a leader has power over others but this power is not delegated. The power of a leader is acquired through consensus and it typically develops over time based on experience and skills as well as exhibited energy and sincerity. The expectation for leader is to empower others, and exhibit unique leadership qualities that include influencing, inspiring and motivating others. In addition to these qualities, a nurse leader is expected to exhibit interpersonal and communication skills. Besides that, a leader will occasionally take calculated risks, but not to the extent of appearing reckless (Marshall & Broome, 2017). For example, a nurse leader may help other nurses in consolidating their workplace complaints and presenting them to the management for action.
