The Vocation of the Nurse and Servant Leadership
The philosophy of servant leadership as described by Greenleaf requires a leader to attend to the needs of those they serve before their own. Nurses look into the needs of patients and progressively ask how they can assist to address their health problems and promote their personal development. As servant leaders, a nurse would focus on solving the challenges of their patients to promote their personal development (Hanse, Harlin, Jarebrant, et al., 2016). The vocation of the nurse is an opportunity that gives the nurse the ability to provide healthcare services while at the same time seeking leadership roles.

The vocation of the nurse entails the incorporation of spiritual and intuitive aspects of nurse leadership to enables a nurse to remain compassionate, empathetic, and considerate to the patients. The vocational level of nursing enables nurses to reach beyond their self-interest and put the well-being of the patient before their interests (de Zulueta, 2016). This aspect of nurse leadership mirrors servant leadership because it enables nurses to fulfill the call to nursing by performing at higher levels, which is complementary to the vocational level. In my practice, I attended to a patient with aggressive cancer who was receiving chemotherapy. During hospitalization, I worked with other healthcare providers to help patients meet her health needs to ensure their healthcare needs are met. The best way I can demonstrate servant leadership in nursing practice is to actively listen to the needs of my staff and support them in decision-making, be empathetic, to create an environment that promotes healing (de Zulueta, 2016). I also intend to demonstrate a high degree of self-awareness and emotional intelligence, persuade, influence, build community, show commitments to the growth of others, show servant leadership, and conceptualize the foresight of the healthcare stakeholders.
